He inspired me nightly with his one-man show, never breaking character despite chronic back pain for the duration of the tour. We shared many hazy nights sharing stories, talking shit, and bonding over food.

As we made our way east, Alex with our sound man Matt Koshak (who also works with Girls, M83) plotted a recording session for New York. Known for working with samples and vintage drum machines, I was shocked and utterly flattered when Alex asked me to play drums with him.

The session was mellow and magically effortless. Koshak booked the studio and we were in and out with a rough mix in about 3 hours flat. I had never recorded in a studio this way before, and certainly never this quickly. We did three takes, all live with a play back speaker and no headphones, no overdubs. Check out Alex’s blog to hear the demo.

At the end of the tour, I met up with Alex and Koshak again in LA to record another track. Look out for the dub tape coming out some time in the near future…
